Pesco Capital of Salvatica

Description

Pesco's the new capital of Salvatica, and home of The Salvatican Throne. Pesco was first founded by Exeter; King Monarch the first. Originally it was a patch of forest left to be by Salvaticans and Felonians alike. It then became a temporary base camp for Exeter and Patterson's forces, the two great revolutionary leaders linking up after freeing most of western Salvatica from Felonian rule. There remained only one great threat to the successful liberation of the west; Fortress X8-87 to the east. If this fortress remained, The Felonians could reinforce their positions with supplies from the east. And if it fell, the remaining Felonian resistance in the west would topple, the remainder of their cities also opening up for attack. Ultimately, the revolutionary force conquered X8-87, though they suffered many casualties. They returned to their base camp and Exeter declared it Pesco. The city that later rose thrived until Felonia bombarded Salvatica with nuclear weapons. Though Pesco wasn't hit, it was abandoned. Durandel later made the decision to make Pesco the site of the new Salvatican capital, partly because of it's abandonment and seclusion. The palace was constructed, and people migrated back to the city to serve as laborers and to set up shops, the palace quickly becoming one of the countries greatest tourist attractions. The castle itself is immense, and surrounded by walls that serve as mini fortresses themselves. A mountain range is at the castle's back, the rockies guarded by Royal Guard troops. To increase overall security, massive walls were constructed around the city. These walls also had the effect of limiting Pesco's potential for growth. Durandel encouraged tourism, and ordered a 50 foot statue of Exeter; King Monarch the first, and founder of Pesco to be built at it's entrance. Construction commenced on the statue, but it was apparent to everyone that a 50 foot statue not being built inside Pesco would be too large to fit through the archway entrances to the city, and too heavy to hoist over the walls. The designers didn't have the nerve to tell Monarch the statue wouldn't fit, and no means of moving the project to inside Pesco along with the gold needed, so they constructed the statue to less than half the planned size, and delivered it as is. Durandel was away at the time, but word quickly spread of the statue, and tourism boomed. Pleased with the results, Durandel made no mention of the size. To this day, people come from all parts of Salvatica to toss ammonite coins into the pool at the statue's feet. Doing so is said to earn one's favor with the late Monarch. The popularity of the statue led Durandel to order that the road leading to the statue be paved in gold, and it's archway widened. The changes led to the other two entrances to the city falling out of favor with visitors. This led to the closing of one, and the neglect of the other. The second largest building in the city is the capital building, where the nobles and men of title often gather and stay prior to meetings at the castle with Monarch. The residents have a community building as their equivalent. Behind the statue, and to it's right, this building serves as a town hall. The castle and the capital building take advantage of old Felonian generators for electricity. Part of this can be bought by the other residents of the city at a premium, but service isn't the best as the palace and capital building have top priority. Very few people know it, but there's a complex network of underground facilities resting below the city, providing water, sewage service, and power. Despite being a large tourist attraction, there are rules that make tourism difficult. Not the least of which is the ban on all non government vehicles. Travellers have to abandon their vehicles outside the city limits, or make the journey on foot, or by Ragnadon back. No train runs to Pesco either, though they do travel to other nearby towns. The surrounding forests have also become home to giant spiders, the creatures having grown accustomed to a fairly steady stream of unwary tourists.
